This cassette tape provides a contemporary style of instrumental accompaniment to the first ten studies of Jacques Delécluse’s Twenty Studies for Timpani (ISMN 979-0-046-23933-5).

I created A Modern Approach to Jacques Delécluse’s Twenty Studies for Timpani with two intents in mind.

Firstly, I hope the accompaniments will provide an enriching practice aid for students working through the studies. When used for practice, I suggest introducing the musical accompaniment only after the student is able to perform the study at tempo by itself. The accompaniment then offers the student the opportunity to experiment with the expressive and “groove” components of the particular study they have prepared.

Secondly, in the right circumstances, the accompaniment for each study elevates these studies into pieces that might be considered as recital repertoire.

Note that each accompaniment has a 2 measure introduction; each study begins at measure 3 of the accompaniment. The harmonic progression of each accompaniment should align to the changing timpani tunings.

Side A of the cassette contains studies 1-10 with a virtual timpani realization, so students might hear an approximation of the piece in performance. Side B contains the accompaniments for studies 1-10 to be used in performance.
