Produced entirely within the pandemic, Purgatory is a dive into my unused sounds that piled up over the years. With nothing but time and hours of unused guitars, synths, loops, field recordings, and computer drones, the album was created thematically first and executed with a catalog of source material that was engineered to evoke the themes.
Intended to explore a space between heaven and hell, pleasure and pain, stasis and anti-stasis, limbo and inertia, claustrophobia and isolation, the latest installment of Dao’s discography meditates on these themes through the project’s spiritual lens. It hopes to evoke life’s transience, time’s relativity, death, and the afterlife. It became a celestial journey that ruminates on the evolving states of being, our inability to escape them, and the fleeting and cyclical nature of all things.
