This album is the culmination of death, loss, discovery, and recovery. After my grandmother passed, I found a tape in her stuff that was labeled: Grief Presentation. A clinical psychologist, it was recorded at a seminar she gave on the “various forms of grief and what we can learn from them.” I began using the tape in live performances and started recorded a track immediately. When I finished, the song was irrevocably lost on a corrupted SD card. I thought it fitting, as if I were being told to be patient. It was just the beginning.
When the dust settled, I began re-recording “A Thousand Different Ways.” I manipulated the tape with guitar pedals and post-production tools and added a synthesizer and guitar loops. “Ruminative Cycle” was recorded tripping on LSD in one take, with a single synthesizer. “Better Help” was created by recording an answering machine complemented by gain static and microphone feedback. “Time Heals All” was improvised on various string sounds—all made with guitar. Finally, on “Distress & Disruptive Functioning” I used side B of the seminar tape and covered it in plate reverb. It moves with a mind of its own.
